How 'Swede' It Was: Wilander vs. 'Borg' last weekend in Houston
By: Johan Kjellsten

NEW YORK, May 1, 2012 - More than 200 fans saw Donnay brand ambassador Mats Wilander take on fellow Swedish countryman and former ATP Tour player Niclas Kroon in a fun exhibition at the Galleria Tennis & Athletic Club (GTAC) in Houston.

However, Kroon, who now serves as a GTAC teaching professional, just wasn’t himself during the match – he opted to show up dressed like another famous tennis Swede, Bjorn Borg, right down to the snug-fitting Fila shorts and Donnay (wooden) Allwood racquet.

Further testament that Kroon’s was having an “out of body experience” at the GTAC exo was when he actually won the match, 10-8, against eight-time Grand Slam Mats.

Kroon’s highest ATP rank was No. 46 in 1989 and he won a lone singles title – at Brisbane in 1989.

But maybe Kroon’s most memorable on-court moment was his invention of the fist-pump symbol “Vicht” move. The Vicht was adapted by Mats and other athletes, including Lleyton Hewitt, and other world-class athletes including soccer stars and swimmers.

After losing to Kroon at the GTAC club, the affable Mats joked, “I will definitely be back for my revenge.”

Prior to the Wilander-Kroon singles match, the two Swedes defeated former Houston ATP pros Tommy Ho and Graydon Oliver 6-4 in a well-played and crowd-pleasing one-set doubles match.

Also on hand was Donnay brand ambassador Peter Lundgren, a former ATP player and coach of top players such as Roger Federer, Marat Safin and Marcelo Rios. Peter was on hand throughout the day to give valuable on-court tips at the sponsors’ clinics.

The finale was an outstanding musical performance by Wilander on guitar along with the Trey Clark Band in front of a packed house.

The next day Saturday Wilander and his WOW touring partner Cameron Lickle conducted a series of much-appreciated drill sessions for members of the Houston Racquet Club followed by an open house Q&A lunch session.

Former Martina Navratilova coach and Donnay sales representative Craig Cardon led an entertaining on-court interview with Mats where some ”inside” tales of the tour were shared with the members of the club.

Mike Stavinoah received a signed and personalized Donnay racquet for his efforts in bringing the WOW experience to the very hospitable Houston Racquet Club.
